CHESS (Comprehensive Health Enhancement Support System) is a multiservice program for patients facing a health crisis. The system is accessed via the Internet or software installed primarily on a personal computer in patients' homes. Systems include Living With Breast Cancer, Living with AIDS/HIV, and Living with Heart Disease. CHESS is designed to :

  1. develop patients' skills and confidence in managing their health care;
  2. provide easy access to expert information and peer support at any time of the day;
  3. promote good decision making and implementing by patients, in collaboration with their providers, and
  4. provide feedback so that patients can monitor their own efforts.

The CHESS system incorporates:

  1. Information services: Instant Library Questions and Answers, Consumer Guide, Referral Director, Dictionary Web Links;
  2. Social support services: Personal Stories, On-line Discussion Groups, Ask an Expert;
  3. Problem-solving services: Decisions and Conflicts, Risk Assessment, Action Plan;
  4. Self-monitoring services: Personal Profile, Health Charts with tailored responses.

Use of CHESS has been shown to improve patients' quality of life, reduce demands on physician time and in some cases, reduce cost of care.
