MediKey - Personal Medical HistoryMediKey is a consumer healthcare application that empowers consumers with a patient-carried personal medical profile. MediKey is an enhancement of the "patient reported" history-taking procedure, which studies have shown to be repetitive, labor intensive, and unreliable. On a one-time basis, relevant patient details are collected in "structured" format; patient demographics, allergies, medications with strength and dose, diagnoses, disorders, surgeries, etc. Using specially developed information theory technology, MediKey compresses this into a 50-100 character alphanumeric code which is easily updatable. This is then laser printed onto a small sticker which may be affixed to an insurance card, employee ID card or driver's license. The MediKey code actually contains the medical profile; however, for reasons of confidentiality, it is encrypted, password protected, and anonymous. Sensitive patient records databases are not required. At any point of need, the personal profile is re-created instantly by dictating the MediKey code/password over a telephone, via a Web browser, or from a local PC to a public copy of the MediKey "translater" program. MediKey utilizes standard office equipment and operates alongside paper-based EMR environments. The MediKey profile will enhance healthcare encounters, pharmacy, triage, online physician's services, and online access to healthcare information resources. MediKey was at the Showcase and Games in Washington, DC on April 28, 1998, and Philadelphia, PA from May 27-28, 1998. Contact information: Lawrence E.
