Neighborhood Networks |
Envision a room in a Department of
Housing and Urban
Development (HUD) - supported property lined with
computer
workstations. Add to this scene an array of health
information and
services provided via the Internet, being used by
residents. This
describes a Neighborhood Networks center. Neighborhood
Networks is a community-based initiative of HUD that
encourages
the development of resource and computer learning centers
in
privately owned HUD-insured and assisted housing. These
Centers work to build self-reliant neighborhoods that
meet the
needs of low-income families and seniors where they live.
There
are currently 375 Neighborhood Networks Centers with
1,000 more being planned. Where else can your services be
utilized by such a large group of consumers? This
innovative program seeks to increase access to health
information and services of families and seniors in
housing developments as well as reduce cost in the
system. Having a nurse do evaluations from a remote
location via
teleconferencing reduces unnecessary trips to the doctor
as well as the ER. Access to onsite services and
information is especially
important for seniors with problems of mobility.
